CHAPTER FIVE

Back to London

We transitioned through Agartha and entered the London portal.

Eventually, Sevenoir told me, when I got more practice, I’d be able to jump from a well I knew straight to the London well in the park by myself. That was cool, but it wasn’t like traveling through Agartha took very long. Now that I knew how to do it, I liked traveling through Agartha. I was oddly cheered by the golden hue and warm hum of the hollow earth that held the giant world tree.

Because it was well after dark London time, Sev walked me to my building on May Queen Market. Plimmy waved as she saw us approach under the light of the streetlamp, as she was locking her front door.

“Well, what a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect you back so soon, Wedd. Do either or both of you fancy joining me at the pub?”

“Oh, Gods, yes,” Sev said, kissing her on the cheek, the rabbit ears bobbing as he leaned down. “Plimmy, you are a Goddess among women.”

“That’s settled, then. Let’s head over to the patio.” Her nose wrinkled as she took in the state of my clothing. “Unless you prefer to have a shower first, Wedd?”

I assured her that was my first course of action. I agreed to meet up with them within the hour to have a pint or two and recount all the day’s tales.

Thanking Sev again for his help, I excused myself from the conversation. I dug my keys out of my damp backpack—thank heavens they hadn’t gotten lost!—and I ran up the three flights of stairs to my flat. I unlocked the door using the large skeleton key and stepped inside, then flipped the bolt and leaned back against the door with a huge sigh.

Safe and sound. I was home.

I dug through my backpack and grabbed what was left of my thaumaturgist manual, the focus for my blood magic, and laid it out to dry on the coffee table in my small living room. The backpack was drier than it had been, but I was going to need to clean it more thoroughly if I planned to pack it up again tomorrow.

Shit, I was going to be in trouble about this. I was pretty sure the waterlogged manual was beyond hope. Maybe Sev and Plimmy could advise me on the best place to get another one.

I took off my boots and left them near the door, padded across the floor to my bedroom where I stripped off the rest of my clothes, and went into the bathroom for a long, hot shower.
